Sri Lanka Minister of Higher Education S.B. Dissanayaka says the government is considering to introduce a new criteria to select university entrants instead of the Z-score.
The Minister says that the government has focused on introducing a new formula instead of going back to the old district proportions system.
The Ministry has already held discussions with the university academic authorities regarding the process. The calculation of Z-scores on the 2011 GCE Advanced Level examination created a crisis this year that led to legal procedures and the delay of university admissions. The Supreme Court ordered to annul the Z-scores of the 2011 examination and re-calculate them separately for the old and new syllabuses. The University Grants Commission calculated the Z-score anew but the students who took the exam under the old syllabus of still complain that they were subjected to an injustice due to re-calculation.
