General Secretary of Sri Lanka's major opposition United National Party (UNP) Tissa Attanayake said today the party had information that a warrant has been obtained to search the house of the UNP media unit chief Mangala Samaraweera.
He said that the warrant has been sought to search the house to arrest a certain person claimed to be hiding in the former Foreign Minister's house.
The UNP General Secretary further said that the actions of the government were to suppress the opposition. He also said that the dictatorial state that is in the formation has deployed intelligence officials to monitor the political activities of the opposition MPs. Attanayake also criticized the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for prompt action to arrest the journalists and equipment of Sri Lanka Mirror and Sri Lanka X News websites pointing out that the same CID delayed arrest of the main suspect of the Katuwana political double murder claiming evidence was insufficient. Samaraweera has accepted the responsibility for the content on the Sri Lanka X News website which is alleged of publishing defamatory information on the President and other important personalities. He has said that Sri Lanka X News is the official website of the UNP's Communications Division and would therefore not be registered since there was no law in the country that has made the registration of news websites compulsory.
