Elections for Sri Lanka's Northern Province soon, government minister assures

The Sri Lankan government will hold elections for the Northern Provincial Council soon, a government minister said Thursday. At a cabinet press briefing today Media and Information Minister Keheliya Rambukwella said
the government will hold the Northern Provincial Council elections soon after completing the preparation of voters' registers and the de-mining process which is still ongoing in some areas of the Province. "Demining work and there are issues with compiling the electoral register. These issues will take time to sort out," Rambukwella has said. The Minister has pointed out that the government has held the general and local government elections in the province and established the civil administration in almost over 95 percent of the areas in the North. Following the end of the war in May 2009, general and Presidential elections as well as local government elections have been conducted in the North. The international community considers elections as an urgent step towards reconciliation with the Tamil minority and has urged the Sri Lankan government to hold the elections for the Northern PC to restore civil administration in the region. Rambukwella assured that the government will make the people in the north benefited by positive results of democracy within a short time.
