Sri Lanka Tamil party says US resolution not against the country

Sri Lanka's major Tamil political party, the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) says the resolution presented by the United States on Sri Lanka to the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) sessions in Geneva only seeks the implementation of the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) recommendations. TNA parliamentarian M.A. Sumanthiran has said
the resolution was not against the country and noted that it was a belief that the resolution was against the country. He has pointed out that the international community was asking questions since the government has failed to even implement minor recommendations. According to Sumanthiran, the government was bound to implement the recommendations since it said the LLRC was the domestic mechanism that would respond to the questions raised by the international community. He has said that the LLRC was appointed by President Mahinda Rajapaksa and has to now implement the recommendations. The TNA party leader R. Sampanthan has reportedly written to the member states of the UNHRC to support the US resolution which calls for an independent investigation into the war crime allegations. The United States Wednesday submitted the draft resolution against Sri Lanka to the UNHRC calling for the government to implement the "constructive recommendations" in the LLRC report and take measures to initiate a credible and independent investigation into accountability issues. The resolution also requests the Sri Lankan government to present a comprehensive action plan expeditiously on the measures to be initiated for implementation of the LLRC recommendations and accept advice and technical assistance of implementing those steps. The government has repeatedly said that it will implement the LLRC recommendations systematically and it needs more time and space without foreign interference to achieve the goal.
