Tensions erupted in Sri Lanka's gem mining town of Kahawatta in the Ratnapura district today when angry mobs set fire to several houses belonged to the suspects of a mysterious murder.
Upon hearing the news of the arrest of the suspects by the CID in connection with the double murder of a mother and a teenage daughter earlier this year, the mob set fire to a house of a local politician who is believed to be behind the murders. The authorities have deployed the Fire Brigades to extinguish the fires. Police Special Task Force was deployed to disperse the mobs that roamed the area setting ablaze the houses and lighting fire crackers after they pelted stone at police. The 52-year-old mother Nayana Nilmini and her 19-year-old daughter Kavindya Chathurangi were mysteriously killed on January 31 in Kahawatta, an area where a series of killings last year gave birth to a fear of evil spirits among masses. Their bodies were found in the jungle in different locations. Following investigations, the police have reportedly arrested a Pradeshiya Sabha member who is also a coordinating secretary of a Minister and several other suspects. The houses that were set ablaze belonged to the families of the suspects.
