Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) says the party is in discussion with other opposition political parties to form a common platform against the government.
Head of the UNP Communications Division and parliamentarian Mangala Samaraweera told a press conference today that the party was in the process of forming a common opposition platform to fight the government.
He noted that the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) has responded positively to the move and unofficial discussions were being held with the Marxist party Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP). According to Samaraweera, the common platform would fight against the government's corruption, wastage, violation of rights and the increasing cost of living. The platform would not be an electoral alliance but only an anti-government platform to fight against the current situation in the country, Samaraweera noted. The UNP is to hold a protest campaign in its series of island wide protests in Panadura tomorrow.
