Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa today launched the second stage of the Deyata Sevana national tree planting campaign a campaign to plant 1.1 million trees in the country.
The President at an auspicious time this morning planted a Na tree at the Botanical Garden in Battaramulla and launched the Campaign themed under "Haritha Ratak - Deyata Sethak".
Under the project a "Green Park" will be established adjacent to the Japanese Friendship Road near Diyawanna Oya in Battaramulla.
The first stage of the Deyata Sevana Tree Planting Programme commenced a year ago has planted 2.9 million trees island wide.
The government says it has recognized the significance of the continuation of the tree planting campaign island wide every year. However, the success of the implementation and continuation of the program will depend on the participation of the public, the government adds.
Minister of Environment, Anura Priyadarshana Yapa, several other Cabinet Ministers, large number of school children and diplomats also attended the tree planting ceremony.
