Sri Lanka Minister of Public Relations Mervyn Silva has ordered an unofficial ban on the sale of beef in Gampaha district.
The Minister, who is well-known for his controversial decisions, has informed the licensed beef stalls through his assistants that the ban is valid from October 01.
The Minister told media he wanted to give an example to the entire country in order to protect the livestock resources.
Gampaha is the district where the Minister has consolidated a popular vote base.
He recently acted against the massive sacrifice of animals lives to Hindu gods at Munneswaram Kovil in Puttalam district as well.
