Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa continued to meet heads of states on the sidelines of the 66th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The President, who is scheduled to address the General Assembly on Friday (23) met with the leaders of Nepal, Colombia and Iran yesterday at the UN Headquarters and held bilateral discussions.
The President during these discussions apprised the Heads of States on Sri Lanka's post-war progress in resettling IDPs, demining, reconstruction endeavors, the democratic process of local government elections in the conflict-affected Northern and Eastern provinces and the massive on-going development in the country.
During the talks with Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad President Rajapaksa expressed his appreciation to the Iranian leader for his leadership skills in bringing speedy development in his country. He expressed gratitude to Iran for the assistance extended to the Sri Lanka's development.
During a meeting with President Rajapaksa his Colombian counterpart Juan Manuel Santos Calderon yesterday has said that he understand Sri Lanka's situation very well based on his country's experience and praised the successful reconciliation process in Sri Lanka.
During discussions with the Nepalese Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai, the President has told the Nepalese leader that steps will be taken soon to commence a direct air service between Colombo and Lumbini by the SriLankan Airlines. The two leaders have emphasized on the importance of further developing trade and tourism between the two countries. The Nepalese Prime Minister has said that Sri Lanka is an excellent example of the development and progress achieved by South Asia.
Minister of External Affairs Prof. G.L. Peiris, Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga and Sri Lanka's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Dr. Palitha Kohona also attended these discussions.
