Sri Lanka Freedom Party celebrates 60th anniversary

Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), the main constituent of Sri Lanka's ruling United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) this evening celebrated its Diamond Jubilee anniversary at the Temple Trees under the patronage of party leader President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
Addressing the gathering, the President said the Sri Lanka Freedom Party is a party committed to freedom.

He pointed out that the party delivered freedom in 1956, achieved freedom in 1972 by totally liberating from colonial rulers Britain and then freed the country from the Tamil Tiger terrorism in 2009.
The President made these remarks addressing the 60th anniversary ceremony of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party at the Temple Trees this afternoon. He also pointed out that those who go against the party always become political refugees.
President Rajapaksa added that the SLFP is not restricted to a particular village, religion or ethnic group. He pointed out that the party could be identified as a common party for all people.
An Anniversary Week has been declared from today till next Monday (September 05). A number of activities including a membership drive had been organized to mark the 60th anniversary.
SLFP was founded by the 4th Prime Minister of Sri Lanka late S.W.R.D Bandaranaike in 1951 and, since then, it has been one of the two largest parties in the Sri Lankan political arena.
