The Defence Ministry of Sri Lanka is to reactivate Civil Defence Committees (CDC) in order to eradicate escalating crime in the country.
Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has said that the CDCs had rendered a great service in eradicating terrorism from the country during the war.
Addressing a gathering of CDC members to inform them of the government's decision to reactivate the committees, Rajapaksa has said the committees were now needed to improve the interaction between the rural community and the police with the aim of controlling crime.
He has said that the government had taken steps to introduce the community police concept following the effectiveness of the CDC during the war.
According to Rajapaksa, such a force was needed to preserve the peace in the country.
