“I will be an adviser for and a well-wisher of the State of Tamil Nadu,” said K. Rosaiah, the former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, who was sworn in as Tamil Nadu Governor on Wednesday.
The Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, M.Y. Eqbal, administered the oath of office to him. Mr. Rosaiah, 78, who succeeded the 85-year-old Surjit Singh Barnala, took the oath in the name of God.
The ceremony, held at the golden jubilee auditorium on the Raj Bhavan campus, was attended by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa and other political leaders, including Vijayakant, Chiranjeevi and K.V. Thangkabalu.
Ms. Jayalalithaa introduced her Cabinet colleagues to the Governor. Later, Mr. Justice Eqbal introduced the High Court judges.
Pointing out that Chennai was the capital of Tamil Nadu and many parts of the present Andhra Pradesh till 1953, Mr. Rosaiah said his political career had begun then, and political leaders of that period had been a source of guidance to people like him. “It is my fortune to be the Governor of a big State like Tamil Nadu.”
On assuming the post, he ceased to be an active political worker and he would discharge his duties as per the Constitution. He would ever remain helpful to all, he told journalists after the ceremony.
Praising the Chief Minister, Mr. Rosaiah said Ms. Jayalalithaa had been supportive of the people of the State.
Describing himself as a person who had been reading a number of newspapers every day since 1952, Mr. Rosaiah said that even now his day began with reading 10 newspapers. He would interact with the media regularly. He knew some Tamil and he had started learning the language, he said. In his interaction with journalists, he spoke in Telugu, English and Tamil.
Earlier, on arrival at the airport here, Mr. Rosaiah was accorded a warm reception by Ms. Jayalalithaa.
