Unauthorized structures in housing schemes of Sri Lankan capital Colombo to be demolished

Housing, Construction and Engineering Minister of Sri Lanka Wimal Weerawansa says steps would be taken to demolish all unauthorized constructions by tenants residing in housing schemes belonging to the National Housing Development Authority (NHDA).

During an inspection tour in Borella, he has said the Ministry would conduct a survey into the NHDA housing schemes to identify the unauthorized structures put up by residents.

Weerawansa has observed that most of the unauthorized structures had been built a long time ago, and that they had a negative impact on common amenities.

However, he has said a final decision on demolishing the unauthorized structures would be made after receiving approval from the Cabinet of Ministers.
