Sri Lanka's National Languages Minister Vasudeva Nanayakkara says that personnel proficient in the Tamil language should be recruited to the country's public sector.
Addressing the inaugural zonal meeting on the establishment of Language Societies in Badulla recently, the Minister observed that procedures involved in recruiting persons to the state sector would have to be amended to accommodate this move.
The Minister said the proposal to amend the procedures and recruit more persons fluent in the Tamil language to the public sector would be made shortly.
Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa's future vision program plans to build an environment where Sinhalese could speak fluent Tamil and Tamil could speak fluent Sinhalese by 2016.
