Sri Lanka President campaigns in Jaffna peninsula of Northern Province

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa arrived in Kayts Island in the Jaffna peninsula today as a part of his tour to the North to inspect the progress of ongoing development projects in the region and boost the ruling party's campaign for the upcoming local government polls in the Northern Province.

This is the first time a Sri Lankan leader has visited Kayts, a small island off the coast of Jaffna Peninsula. Traditional Industries and Small Enterprises Minister and Jaffna parliamentarian, Douglas Devananda welcomed the President to the island.
Addressing the large gathering at a public rally held in Welanai Junction in Kayts this evening, the President pledged to provide all necessary facilities for the development in the North to bring the region to the same standards as the rest of the country.

He requested the people in the North therefore, to join hands with the government to protect the hard won freedom and to rebuild the nation.

Speaking at the rally, Minister Devananda said the President has a better understanding on the problems faced by the public in the north.

Colombo district parliamentarian Prabha Ganeshan said President Rajapaksa is the only leader that Tamil people can trust.

During his tour in the North, the President will declare open the new two-story building of Kopai School, Pooneryn Hospital and Kilinochchi Economic Center. He will lay foundation stone for the construction of the Kilinochchi Trade Center.

On Wednesday (20) the President will launch the construction work to build an international level sports complex in Kilinochchi at a cost of Rs. 360 million.

Several ministers and parliamentarians also participated in the occasion.
