The Parliamentary Committee on High Posts in Sri Lanka has received a petition against the appointment of a former Inspector General of Police (IGP) as an ambassador to an overseas mission.
A petition has been filed against former IGP Dr. Mahinda Balasuriya's appointment as Sri Lanka's Ambassador to Brazil.
The local media has reported that the petition had been signed by a businessman named Dr. M.G.M.S Zurfick claiming that Balasuriya is not suitable for the post of an ambassador.
Balasuriya tendered his resignation from the post of IGP prematurely following a clash between the police and free trade zone workers in Katunayake that resulted in the death of a FTZ worker.
Meanwhile, Dr. Zurfick has said that he has sent a copy of the petition to the Brazilian Foreign Ministry and Parliament as well.
