Sri Lanka government delays setting up of a special metropolitan authority

Sri Lanka government sources say the government has postponed tabling a proposed bill to set up a special authority to take the Colombo and adjacent metropolitan areas under one local administration.

The government intended to take the Colombo, Sri Jayawardenapura, Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia Municipal areas and Kolonnawa Urban Council area under this authority and subjected to the control of a Governor.

The authority was planned to be placed under the Defense Ministry.

However, now the government has decided to hold elections for these local councils. The proposed bill is to be brought following the elections, government sources say.
