A Chembur couple whose 16-year-old daughter Eshwari Ganeshan went missing on July 1 learnt through their distant relative from Tamil Nadu on July 13 that he had seen someone bury a girl resembling Eshwari.
Eshwari's parents scoured the neighbourhood and contacted their relatives in a bid to trace their child for 10 days. When their search yielded no result, they lodged a missing person complaint with the Tilak Nagar police.
"Two days later, the girl's parents told us their daughter had eloped with a youth from Deonar, Illayaraj Kaliyan (27). The parents claimed that Kaliyan had killed their daughter after kidnapping her," said a police officer.
During the probe, the sleuths came to know that Eshwari had left her house on July 1 around 10 am after informing her mother, Parmeshwari Ganeshan (37), that she was going to work. In her complaint, the girl's mother said, "My neighbours had seen Eshwari with Kaliyan. I managed to trace his sister, Jaya Subramani (32), who told me that my daughter had stayed with Kaliyan for four days at a house in Deonar. They later fled to Tamil Nadu."
Eshwari's maternal uncle Shekar Swamy told TOI, "On July 13, we received a call from a distant relative. He told us that he had seen a man bury a girl resembling Eshwari. The youth told our relative that the girl died of burn injuries. I immediately contacted my brother-in-law in Tamil Nadu and asked him to confirm if the dead girl was my niece. He told me that the teenager was Eshwari ." On July 16, the Tilak Nagar police changed the missing complaint to an FIR and booked Kaliyan under Section 363 (kidnap) of the Indian Penal Code.
"The victim's family is waiting for relatives to reach Mumbai from Tamil Nadu with more information. Further action will be taken once we get a clearer picture," said senior inspector R M Gavit.
