Union home minister P Chidambaram has confirmed the use of ammonium nitrate in the Wednesday terror strike in Mumbai. He said the attacks were well coordinated but refused to confirm at this stage which terror group was behind the attack.
He said, every terror group was a suspect at this point in time and the police have been told not to rule out any angle before investigations.
Chidambaram refused to accept any intelligence failure and said that there was no specific or credible input about the Wednesday terror strikes.
The Union home minister said a massive probe was on to find leads into the terror strike with all the agencies working in coordination.
He said that Maharashtra could have been targeted because the state police have successfully neutralised hostile elements in the last three months.
The Union home minister said the explosion at Dadar was of low intensity but the other two at Opera House, Zaveri Bazar were of high intensity. He said the blasts were not remote-trigerred.
Responding to a question in a press conference along with Maharashtra chief minister and all other senior officers, Chidambaram said that the target was not aimed at foreigners in the country.
He also rejected suggestions that the terror attacks was aimed at destabilising the financial markets.
Chidambaram said 17 people have been confirmed dead in the serial strike. However, the toll could go up to 18 as one body with a severed head had to be identified. 131 people have been injured in the terror attack, of whom 26 are seriously injured.
26 injured have been discharged and another 82 are stable, he added.
Chidambaram praised the resilience of the Mumbaikars.
Maharashtra chief minister Prithviraj Chavan announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the kin of those killed in the attack. He also announced Rs 50,000 for the injured.
In the morning, Chidambaram held a high-level meet with Maharashtra chief minister to take stock of the situation.
Earlier, he visited the three blast sites late on Wednesday night and spoke to investigators and forensic experts who were trying to get leads into the blasts.
Chidambaram also visited Saifee Hospital close to Opera House and instructed the doctors to take good care of the injured.
