Sri Lanka's Inspector General of Police Mahinda Balasooriya submitted his resignation today to the Ministry of Defense, government sources said.
Government sources said the police chief resigned taking responsibility for the police exceeding their powers on Monday in the clash between the police and Free Trade Zone workers where over 300 persons were injured.
The authorities transferred the Deputy Inspector General of Western Province to the Central Province and arrested an inspector and a sub inspector under suspicion of creating the clash.
Police Spokesperson SP Prishantha Jayakody however said the IGP has expressed his desire to retire from service in order to pursue further studies in Russia.
The Defence Ministry later in the day has reportedly confirmed the IGP's resignation.
Meanwhile, police administration division said the Deputy Inspector General N.K. Ilangakoon is acting as the Inspector General of Police at the moment.
