Sri Lanka government allocates money for mass scale development in Hambanthota

The cabinet of Sri Lanka has granted money to begin mass scale development projects in Hambanthota of Southern Province to develop the tsunami devastated city as a center of business activity.

Some of the projects identified to be implemented include construction of high income housing, middle income housing, hospital, police station, post office, city hotels, bus stand, market, theater, banking square, schools, and beach parks etc.

Accordingly, cabinet granted approval to allocate a sum of Rs 812 Million to acquire the lands required by the Urban Development Authority for implementation of these development projects. These lands have been identified as land for central business and industrial activity.

Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa who hails from Hambanthota dreams to make his hometown an emerging city in the world. The city already has an international harbor built and construction of an international airport is in progress.

Sri Lanka also hopes to win the bid to host 2018 Commonwealth Games at Hambanthota.

The cabinet approval was granted on a proposal made by President in his capacity as the Minister of Finance.
