he accounts of Sri Lanka's cricket authority, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) have not been audited for the past five years, a government minister has revealed.
Senior Minister of Human Resources D. E.W. Gunasekara has told Sri Lanka's National News Agency Lankapuvath that the SLC accounts have not been audited for the past five years, and the Auditor General has been requested to submit a report to the Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) by early next month.
Senior Minister Gunasekara is the chairman of the COPE, the authoritative body that examines the accounts of public corporations and of any business or other institutions vested in the Government under any written law along with the reports of the Auditor-General.
The Minister has said upon receiving the Auditor General's the Commission would set a date in July to summon SLC officials before COPE.
The problems currently plaguing the cricket body are already being discussed at COPE meetings under 'any other business', the Minister has noted.
Minister Gunasekara also noted that it is the first time in its history that SLC is being summoned before the Commission.
The SLC recently revealed that it is in the red after hosting the 2011 Cricket World Cup and sought help from the country's state bank and from the government as well.
The cricket authority has asked the government for a grant of two billion rupees and a soft loan of 1.5 billion rupees from the Bank of Ceylon to cover the expenses incurred for hosting the World Cup.
