Indian PM to visit Sri Lanka, top level delegation informs Sri Lankan President

The high level three-member Indian delegation currently in Sri Lanka met Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa this morning at the President's House and held discussions on bilateral issues important to both nations.


The Indian delegation, led by Indian National Security Advisor Shiv Shankar Menon and comprising Foreign Ministry Secretary Nirupama Rao and Defence Secretary Pradeep Kumar, has handed over a letter from Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh accepting an invitation from President Rajapaksa to visit Sri Lanka, the President's Media Division announced.


Director General of the President's Media Division Bandula Jayasekara has told the local media that the visiting Indian delegation has handed over the letter of acceptance to President Rajapaksa during their meeting in Colombo this morning.
External Affairs Minister Prof. G.L Peiris, Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga, Secretary Ministry of Defence Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, Indian High Commissioner Ashok K. Kantha, and Secretary Ministry of Foreign Affairs Karunatilaka Amunugama were also present at the meeting.
The Indian troika has already held discussions with External Affairs Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris and Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.
The Indian delegation was scheduled to meet the members of the major Tamil party, Tamil National Alliance (TNA) before concluding their visit today.
TNA parliamentarian Suresh Premachandran has told the media that the discussion with the Indian delegation today would be based on a political solution to the ethnic issue, the resettlement of the war displaced Tamil civilians and the country's situation following the war.
The Indian delegation's visit to the island immediately follows the passing of a resolution by the Tamil Nadu State Assembly to impose economic sanctions against Sri Lanka.
