Former Tamil Nadu chief daughter may spend time in Delhi jail

Former Tamil Nadu chief minister M. Karunanidhi's daughter Kanimozhi may have to spend some time in Delhi's Tihar jail.

The Supreme Court on Monday rejected bail plea of Kanimozhi directing her to go back to the trial court with fresh bail application after charges against her have been framed in the 2G spectrum allocation scam.
A Supreme Court vacation bench of Justices G.S. Singhvi and B.S. Chauhan rejected her bail plea after hearing arguments said that Kanimozhi can invoke Section 437 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), which provides for a consideration in grant of bail to a woman accused under the age of 60.
Kanimozhi's lawyers argued that she be granted bail since she had to take care of her 10-year-old son as her husband keeps travelling frequently for work. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) took the plea that Kanimozhi being a Member of Parliament is influential enough to tamper with witnesses.

Kanimozhi a co-accused in the Rs. 1.76 trillion 2G spectrum allocation scam was taken into custody on May 20. It was her third attempt to secure bail following rejection of the same by the trial court and the Delhi High Court.
She along with Kalaignar TV chief Sharad Kumar is accused of receiving the slush money amounting to over Rs. 2 billion.
Kanimozhi holds 20 per cent stake in the company owned by the Karunanidhi family.
