Tamil Nadu Congress chief steps down over assembly poll drubbing

Owning responsibility for the drubbing in the Tamil Nadu assembly polls, state Congress president K.V. Thangabalu stepped down from the post on Saturday
.Thangabalu, however, asserted that the party is 'still strong' across the state and would continue to serve the public.

In the 234-member legislative assembly, the state ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and its ally, the Congress party, were decimated, winning only 35 seats while the J.Jayalalithaa-led All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) grabbed nearly 200 berths.

Addressing a news conference in Chennai, Thangabalu said: "Owning responsibility of the defeat of Congress in the state, I applied to tender my resignation to my Congress President. This is my personal appeal to the Congress President because it is my moral responsibility to behave as a political leader."

"At the same time, I will continue to do my best for the betterment and development of the Congress in the state," he added.

However, dismissing reports of a weakening Congress influence in the state, Thangabalu asserted that the party was a force to reckon with and could not be written off with just one election.

"Congress is the third largest formation in the state. Next to AIADMK and DMK is the Congress. So, Congress cannot be ruled out, Congress cannot be written off. Congress is a force to reckon with, Congress presence is in every village, every ward, every booth there today," Thangabalu said.

"I said, in each and every booth, the Congress committees are there, Congress men and women are there, and Congress functionaries are there," he added.

The Tamil Nadu Congress chief also revealed the DMK-Congress alliance would continue, despite misgivings between the two allies over the multi-billion dollar telecom spectrum allocation scam.

"We respect the people's verdict in Tamil Nadu, we salute the verdict. Also, the Tamil Nadu Congress and DMK combination will continue to work for the betterment of the people in India and people of Tamil Nadu. Our alliance, Congress-DMK, continues," Thangabalu said.
