A senior trade union leader and minister of the Sri Lankan government has extended his support to the proposed private sector pension scheme amidst growing protests against the proposed legislation.
National Languages and Social Integration Minister Vasudeva Nanayakkara has told the media that he supported the proposed pension scheme for the private sector.
According to Nanayakkara, some trade unions opposed the pension scheme without knowing what it entails and the benefits to the private sector employees. He said most trade unions were opposing the Bill for personal gain. He said that his trade union supported the Bill.
Nanayakkara added that the government had introduced amendments to the Bill and that President Mahinda Rajapaksa would discuss the piece of legislation with the private sector trade unions.
