Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK chief M.Karunanidhi Sunday charged that AIADMK leader J. Jayalalithaa, other political leaders and a section of media were blowing the 2G spectrum issue out of proportion to defame his party.
Reiterating his charge that opposition and a section of media is trying to isolate the party in the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government, he said the final loss in allocation of 2G spectrum/radio waves to mobile telephony companies is yet to be arrived at.
Writing in party organ Murasoli, Karunanidhi said the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) had said the presumptive loss to the government in spectrum allocation is Rs.1.76 trillion but said before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) that when explored from other angles, the estimated loss was a ‘mere’ Rs.37,666 crore.
He said Arun Shourie, communications minister in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government, stated the estimated loss in spectrum allocation is around Rs.30,000 crore and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has put the loss at Rs.22,000 crore.
According to Karunanidhi the loss estimates vary between different persons and till now the estimates are only notional and a final figure is yet to be finalised.
He said the DMK will face the spectrum case legally unlike Jayalalithaa who is adopting dilatory tactics in the case of amassing disproportionate wealth against her.
Karunanidhi said Jayalalithaa’s wealth had increased from Rs.2.18 crore in 1991 to Rs.66 crore in April 1995.
Referring to the list of posers by Jayalalithaa, the DMK leader said he would not reply to them as the matter is before the courts.
