Sri Lanka's opposition expresses willingness to work with government to counter allegations in UN report

Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) has today expressed the party's willingness to work together with the government to counter the allegations leveled against the country in the report on Sri Lanka prepared by the United Nations Panel of Experts.

UNP Kurunegala District parliamentarian Dayasiri Jayasekara told a press conference that the government could have prevented any international interference by providing a political solution to the ethnic issue.

However, he said that party rivalries needed to be cast aside when facing allegations leveled against the country by the UN panel of experts.

Jayasekara observed that the allegations against the country made in the UN report could not be defeated by protests and fasts.

Party's co-deputy leader Sajith Premadasa has called for a national agenda with the participation of all parties to avoid the possibility of Sri Lankan security forces being taken to an international war tribunal by the UN.

"This is not a time to accuse each other as it is the duty of the government and the opposition to maintain the independence and stability of our country," Premadasa has said.
