Sri Lanka Opposition MP writes to UN Chief on Panel's report

Sri Lanka opposition United National Party (UNP) parliamentarian and President's Counsel, Wijedasa Rajapakse in a letter to the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has said that the appointment of an Expert Panel contravened the provisions of the UN Charter.

MP Rajapaksa, in an electronic letter mailed today to the UN Chief has pointed out that the publication of a report from such a panel was illegal as the so called panel had no legitimate powers to perform such an exercise.

He has noted that the UN Chief had failed to get approval from the UN Security Council in taking measures with regard to the appointment of the panel.

Rajapakse has highlighted that an International Court cannot act against Sri Lanka regarding war crime accusations as Sri Lanka has not ratified the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court.

Underscoring that Sri Lanka successfully defeated terrorism after thirty years, Rajapkase has said that the UN must commend Sri Lanka's success in restoring peace.

The MP has warned that the UN Chief must take responsibility for any catastrophe that might befall on the country from publishing the expert panel report.
