The SLFP to appoint members to newly demarcated wards under Sri Lanka's new LG electoral system

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) has decided to appoint members to the newly demarcated wards following the amendments made to the local government electoral system.

SLFP General Secretary and Minister Maithripala Sirisena has told the media that unofficial members would also be appointed to head the wards that have not been won by the party.

Parliament on Tuesday approved amendments to the Local Government Bill.

The new local government electoral system includes 70% of the First-Past-the-Post system and 30% of the Proportional Representation system and requires a ward system.

According to Sirisena, the SLFP will hold an internal election within the next six months to elect party organizers for every ward created following the recommendations of the de-limitation committees.

The de-limitation committees are appointed at district level to demarcate boundaries to newly created wards of the local government bodies.
