The National Anti-Doping Agency of Sri Lanka in accordance with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) code has imposed a provisional suspension on Wanniarachchi from taking part in the games until the hearings against him by the Commonwealth Games Federation are completed.
Wanniarachchi, the Commonwealth boxing gold medalist, had tested positive for the steroid nandrolone, at the last year's Commonwealth Games in New Delhi.
Wanniarachchi, 30, won men's 56kg bantam weight gold medal at the Commonwealth Games held in New Delhi in October 2010.
He is likely to face a two-year ban and lose his medal if his 'B' urine sample too tested positive for banned anabolic steroids. The 'B' sample urine test is reportedly under legal challenge.
