Sri Lanka ruling party leads in local government election results

The Election Department has released the elections results for most of the local authorities in the provinces.

According to the official results released for 233 local bodies so far, the ruling United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) is leading with 55.35 percent of the votes and 182 local authorities while the major opposition United National Party has received 33.86 percent votes and 8 local bodies.

The Marxist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) has lost its only stronghold, Tissamaharama PS in the Hambantota district. The JVP has received only 3.15 percent of the votes.

The Tamil National Alliance has won 11 from north and the east, Sri Lanka Muslim Congress 4 from the East and Up Country Peoples Front 1 from Central hills.

Minor parties and Independent groups contested for few Pradeshiya Sabhas have received 7.63 percent of the votes.
