Sri Lanka's Justice Ministry to appoint retired judges to hear old cases

Sri Lanka's Justice Ministry is to launch a pilot project where retired judges would be appointed to sit for cases that have been pending for over 10 years.

Justice Minister Rauf Hakeem addressing a gathering said that under the pilot project retired judges will be appointed to sit during weekends for cases that have been pending for a long period of time.

He has said that the Chief Justice has already consented to the project.

According to Hakeem there were some 800 cases at the Colombo District Court that have been pending for over 10 years.
