Sri Lanka reconciliation commission to end public hearings this week

Sri Lanka's Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) appointed by President Mahinda Rajapaksa is to end its public sittings this week.

The last two field visits of the LLRC are scheduled for February 18th in Matara and 19the in Galle. Both meetings are open to the public and the public are allowed to give both oral and written evidence, according to LLRC spokesman Lakshman Wickremasinghe.

The LLRC has cancelled its field visit to Ampara scheduled for this month due to the heavy rain and flooding in the Eastern province.

It has previously held public hearings in the war-battered towns of Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Vavuniya, Omanthai, and Mullaitivu in the Northern Province and Batticaloa and Trincomalee in the Eastern Province.

The Commission requires time to analyze evidences gathered from the public before preparing its final report, he said.

The LLRC has already begun the preparation of the final report on the evidence they have gathered from the public sessions it held for the past six months.

The spokesman said the Commission may hold pocket meetings after the last two meetings or call relevant witnesses if needed for clarification when it is preparing the final report.

The Commission is expected to hand over its final report to President Mahinda Rajapaksa in May.

President Rajapaksa in May 2010 appointed the eight-member Commission to report on the lessons to be learnt from the events during the period from 21st February 2002 to 19th May 2009. The Commission is chaired by the former Attorney General Chitta Ranjan de Silva.

The LLRC held its first sittings on August 11, 2010. In November 2010, the President extended its mandate till May 15, 2011.

From the evidence the Commission gathered so far, the LLRC has suggested immediate administrative measures to ease the lives of resettled Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and all people living in the former war-battered areas.
