Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa ceremonially opened a new swimming pool and a lifeguard training center at the Pannipitiya Dharmapala Vidyalaya today at the invitation of the school's Principal, K.G. Wimalasena.
The Training Center for Swimming, Water Rescue and Survival Center was constructed by the Past Pupils' Association of Dharmapala Vidyalaya in association with the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society with funds from Taiwan Red Cross Society.
Prasanna Dasanayke, Chairman of the Financial Commission of the Past Pupils' Association was instrumental in establishing the Center to provide training in life saving methods.
Speaking at the occasion President Rajapaksa said that sports is an essential factor for a healthy life an d pointed out that sports help to develop patience, courage and the ability to face any challenge.
Government ministers, parliamentarians, staff, students and parents also participated in the event.
