Sri Lanka's Marxist party Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) today accused the governing UPFA of being engaged in thuggery throughout the local government elections campaign and that state powers and resources were also being misused.
JVP Propaganda Secretary and parliamentarian Vijitha Herath told a press conference today that there are 24 reported cases where the police had acted in favor of the government without implementing the law when state powers and resources have been misused in contravention to election laws.
He said that the governing party was using tactics to instill fear in the minds of the people in the North by getting intelligence personnel to visit houses and gather information about opposition party candidates.
According to Herath there have so far been 62 reported cases of election related violence where people have been intimidated, threatened, attacked, and party offices being destroyed.
