Indian Speaker arrives in Sri Lanka for Commonwealth Parliamentary Association conference

India's Lok Sabha Speaker Mrs. Meira Kumar arrived in Colombo Friday night on a four-day official visit, her office said in a release.

Mrs. Kumar the latest high-profile Indian official to visit Sri Lanka is here on an invitation to participate as the Chief Guest in the 3rd Asian Regional Conference of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) beginning Saturday.

Sri Lanka Branch of Asia Region of CPA is hosting the Conference in Colombo from 11 to 16 February, 2011.

Mrs. Kumar's visit follows the visit by Indian External Affairs Minister, S. M. Krishna in November and the Foreign Secretary Mrs. Nirupama Rao's visit in January.

Sri Lankan Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne is to declare open the conference Saturday (12).

Mrs. Kumar is to deliver a speech at the Opening Ceremony of the Conference. She has also agreed to be the Lead Speaker in one of the Plenary Session on "Poverty Alleviation" her office said in a statement.

During the two days of business sessions on Saturday and Sunday participants will take part in three plenary sessions on the subjects of "Climate Change and Natural Disasters", "Poverty Alleviation", and "Mother and Child", which have been identified as top priority areas for Parliamentarians of the region.

During her stay in Sri Lanka, Mrs. Kumar is expected to visit Sigiriya and Kandy.
