Golf course to come to Hambanthota, Sri Lankan MP says

Sri Lanka will have a new golf course in the city of Hambanthota on the southern coast, next year, according to a government parliamentarian.

In an interview to the Indian daily Times of India, Hambanthota district parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa has said that the government is planning to build a golf course in Hambanthota and a Chinese company has already come up with a proposal.

Discussing his plans to bring the Commonwealth Games to the area in 2018, MP Rajapaksa has said that plans are afoot to construct a state-of-the-art athletics stadium next year.

He has revealed plans to construct a private university in the area and the university students will be able to use the facilities for training.

"We are getting a lot of help from the Indian government as well as other countries. We are hoping to make this the sports village" Namal Rajapaksa has told the Times of India.

MP Rajapaksa also has said that the construction of a five star hotel is to begin in the middle of this year.

"We have signed a host of contracts with five-star hotel companies like JW Marriot, Hyatt and Shangrila," he has said.

The Hong Kong-based luxury hotel group Shangri-La announced in January that it plans to develop a 300-key city resort on approximately 100 acres of land in Hambanthota, to open in 2013.

According to the MP, a fully functional international airport will be ready by November 2012 to boost air transportation for athletes and cricketers to travel to Hambanthota.
