Following a comprehensive review of all listed terrorist groups, the European Union on Wednesday re-listed Sri Lanka’s rebel group Tamil Tigers as a terrorist outfit.
The 27-nation bloc first outlawed the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) as a terror group in May 2006 due to rise in the armed conflict in the region. Since then, the government held two inconclusive round of talks with rebels in Geneva.
The peace talks initiated after the signing of 2002 cease-fire agreement with Norway’s mediation.
Nearly 31 countries, including the U.S., the U.K. and India, have already declared the group as terrorist organization.
