Sri Lanka Deputy Minister of Ports and Highways Nirmala Kothalawala told media that the damage to the national highway network alone of the country due to floods is around Rs. 250 million.
The damaged roads are in the North Central, Eastern, and Central provinces. The worst affected are the roads in the Eastern Province, he said.
The recent floods submerged a large number of roads in the Eastern and North Central provinces washing away some parts of the roads and damaging many bridges and culverts. Landslides did the heaviest damage to highways in the Central Province.
Many bi-roads that do not belong to the national highway network have also been damaged.
The Ministry of Ports and Highways has already taken measures to repair the damaged roads, the Deputy Minister said.
