US funds water project in Puttalama in Northwestern Sri Lanka

The United States has funded a project to provide fresh water to the Semmandaluwa community in Puttalam Township of Northwestern Sri Lanka.

The U. S. Ambassador in Colombo Patricia Butenis declared open the water line extension along Semmandaluwa Road in the Township of Puttalam, enabling 100 families in the area to obtain fresh water, a press release issued by the U. S. Embassy said.

Acting on a request by the local residents conveyed by Mayor Mohammed Nazmi, Ambassador Butenis has taken measures to fund the construction with the help of the U.S. Embassy's Civil Military Support Element and the United States Pacific Command.

"We at the United States Embassy are pleased to have been able to assist you and will continue to be Sri Lanka's partner in addressing the vital necessities of communities like yours here in Puttalam," Ambassador Butenis has said at the occasion.

Last August representatives from the United States Pacific Command conducted a nine-day humanitarian mission, Operation Pacific Angel 2010 in the Puttalam Township. The group partnered with the mayor Nazmi to provide a power generator, lighting, and three new computers to the Semmandaluwa Kanishta Vidyalaya.

Ambassador Butenis has thanked the community members, representatives from the Water Supply and Drainage Board, the locally elected representatives and the Sri Lankan Government for cooperating to make the water line project a success.

She also expressed confidence that the people in Semmandaluwa would continue to work together on the operations and maintenance of the water line which now belongs to them.
