“Tamil Nadu will continue to lead in the manufacturing sector and also foster leadership in order to sustain the manufacturing growth” said Dr. M K Stalin, Hon’ble Deputy Chief Minister, Government of Tamil Nadu in his inagural at the TN Summit on “Sustaining Manufacturing Leadership of Tamil Nadu” organised by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in Chennai Today.
Dr Stalin said that Tamil Nadu is leading in several other sectors including electronics, food processing, rubber, healthcare, financial services, etc in view of the entrepreneurial skills of the people of the State.
At the national level, Tamil Nadu is leading in the manufacturing field. The State has over 350 companies in the auto components sector which contributes over 35% of national auto component production. The State is one among the top 3 fastest growing States in the country in terms of number of industrial units, FDI flow, number of employees, said Dr Stalin.
Dr Stalin said that in the last 5 years, the State has attracted 43 large industrial units with an overall investment of Rs.50,615 crore. The large presence of electronic manufacturing companies such as; Nokia, Motorola, Siemens, Foxconn, Dell, Flextronics, etc has made Tamil Nadu as a leader in electronics manufacturing, he said.
He urged companies to allocate funds for Research & Development in promoting new products with focus on quality and low cost to remain competitive in the global market.
Mr. Rajeev Ranjan, IAS, Principal Secretary to Government, Industries Department, Government of Tamil Nadu in his special address said that Tamil Nadu has matured as the manufacturing destination, and the Government is very focused on sustaining this growth. Manufacturing has globally become very important and India has to keep pace with other countries.
The Tamil Nadu Government is looking at transforming Tamil Nadu into a global manufacturing hub, with researchers and other experts in India who have seen the markets closely and have exploited every opportunity to make the best out of it are working on this sector and we hope to be market leaders in the future.
He also said that the State Government would soon bring out sector specific policies to promote manufacturing in the State. Towards this, the State is working closely with the National Manufacturing Competitveness Council, he added.
Mr. R K Jain, IAS, Joint Secretary, National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council (NMCC) in his read out speech of Dr V Krishnamurthy, Chairman, National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council said that the low share of manufacturing sector in GDP, lower average growth of manufacturing sector coupled with low level of employment generation are matters of concern.
The long-term solution lies in improving the competitiveness of Indian manufacturing sector while ensuring creation of adequate jobs, said Mr Jain. For this to happen, around 12% growth rate of manufacturing is required for ensuring einclusive growth rate of 9-10% growth of Indian economy, he further added.
Mr Jain stressed that there is an urgent need for transforming the young and energetic managers iinto Visionary Leaders of Manufacturing for future growth of the sector. Towards this objective, the NMCC has pioneered Visionary Leadership in Manufacturing Programe with the cooperation of Ministry of HRD, IIT, IIMs & CII, he said.
Mr. T T Ashok in his special address said that growth in the manufacturing sector in Tamil Nadu is attributed to factors such as favourable Government policies, which includes attractive investment incentives and subsidies, creation of special economic zones, simplified application process and social factors like vast skilled and cost-effective labour, and abundant natural resources.
Ms. R Nandini, Chairperson, CII Tamil Nadu in her opening address said that the State has been consolidating its position as one of the leading Industrialized States of India. The Government of Tamil Nadu has been instrumental in providing a pro-active and dynamic policy environment, which has enabled it to attract huge investments facilitating employment generation and raising the standard of living of people in the State, she added.
Mr. C N Prasad, Convenor, Manufacturing Competitiveness Panel, CII Tamil Nadu in his welcome address said that Tamil Nadu has become an ideal destination for investment in various sectors like Pharmaceuticals, Automobile, Electronics, Bio-technology, etc.
