Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi Wednesday inaugurated the Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers Ltd's (TNPL) Rs.1,000 crore mega paper manufacturing machine at its plant in Pugalur town in Karur district, around 330 km from here.
Sitting at the state secretariat here, Karunanidhi, through video conferencing, inaugurated the 191-metre-long machine that can produce 155,000 tonnes of paper per annum (tpa).
The new machine would take the company's annual production capacity to 400,000 tonne, thereby making TNPL the second largest paper producer in the country, Karunanidhi said.
He said the foundation stone was also laid for TNPL's three other projects - a 600 tonnes per day (tpd) mini cement plant which would involve an outlay of Rs.67 crore, a new pulp line (manufacturing pulp out of waste paper) with a per day capacity of 300 tonnes at an investment of Rs.175 crore and modernisation of steam generators and power division which would cost Rs.135 crore.
The company would use the lime sludge from its pulp mill and the fly ash from its power plant for making cement.
The new pulp line would increase the company's captive pulp capacity to 800 tpd. The pulp will be used to make printing and writing paper.
