Sri Lanka parliament to convene tomorrow for the New Year

The Sri Lankan parliament is to convene tomorrow (04) for the New Year and the proposed Local Authorities Elections (Amendment) Bill is to be debated through out the day.

The main opposition United National Party (UNP) today said the party would call for a postponement of the bill since the government has decided to hold the local government elections under the old electoral system.

Chief Opposition Whip John Amaratunga has said that the opposition has called for a debate on the subjects allocated to the 10 Senior Ministers in the government on Friday (07).

The debate on the subjects of the Senior Ministers was called following the many statements made by opposition politicians during the budget debate where senior government members have been sidelined.

Meanwhile the debate on the extension of Emergency Regulations is to take place on Wednesday (05).
