Sri Lanka Marxists to go alone in the local government elections, coalition not to contest

Political sources say that Sri Lanka's Marxist opposition alliance Democratic National Alliance (DNA) will not contest the local government elections.

Marxist Janatha Vimukthi Pearamuna (JVP), the major constituent of the DNA which has seven seats in the parliament, announced today that they would contest the local government election as a single entity.

The Leader of the JVP Somawansa Amarasinghe addressing a press conference today said the party has decided to go alone at the local polls.

The decision had been conveyed to the leader of the DNA former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka who is serving a 30-month jail term, he said.
