Sajith Premadasa calls for Sri Lankan people to unite to create a new era

Sri Lanka main opposition United National Party (UNP) senior and Hambanthota District parliamentarian Sajith Premadasa called for the masses of the country to unite to strengthen economic and social standards of the common people and create a new era.

Addressing a function to open a new political office at Polhengoda in Colombo Saturday (01), the charismatic party leadership hopeful said millions of people are suffering immense economic hardships now and people must unite to uplift their lives.

"There are 1.2 million families without a house on their own. There are thousands of youth helpless with no employment opportunities. More people have fallen into an economic abyss because of high cost of living," Premadasa said.

"We must all strive to strengthen the economic and social strength of the common people," Premadasa urged.

Speaking at the event UNP parliamentarian Dayasiri Jayasekara said the government is scheming to sabotage the reforms brought about in the party by holding local government polls in March before the stipulated 120-day period the party has to hold elections to appoint a party leader.

"The government wants to sabotage the reform programmes of the United National Party. The only reason why the government is trying to hold the local government elections is because it is scared of the UNP rising as a strong opposition," he said.

"Persons who claim that it is not the time for leadership changes in the UNP saying that local government elections were coming up, then those persons are the cat's paws of the government to sabotage reforms," he added.

UNP parliamentarian and economist Dr. Harsha De Silva said the government would drastically increase the electricity charges after the local government elections.

He said the government has pledged to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to make the Sri Lanka Electricity Board a profit making institution and the government has to increase the electricity charges to fulfill that agreement.
