President instructs cricket officials to select the best Sri Lanka Cricket team for World Cup 2011

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa today instructed the officials of Sri Lanka Cricket to select the best national team for the upcoming World Cup 2011 to be played partially in Sri Lanka


Addressing a meeting held at the Temple Trees this morning with the Sri Lanka cricket officials President Rajapaksa told the officials that the cricket selection committee is responsible to select the best team to represent the country at the upcoming cricket tournament.


The President has said that every citizen of the country expects the Sri Lankan team to win the World Cup and therefore, the officials should be responsible to enhance the confidence of the Sri Lankan cricketers.
He told the officials not to omit any capable cricketers because of personal issues and select the best 15-member squad.
President Rajapaksa accompanied by the cricket officials this morning visited the R. Premadasa international cricket stadium in Kettarama, Colombo to inspect the progress of its reconstruction.


The President instructed the officials to accelerate the constructions of the new international grounds and enhance the facilities for the foreign cricketers.
The Chairman of the Cricket Interim Committee D.S. de Silva has said the constructions of Pallekele, Kettarama in Colombo and Sooriyawewa grounds will be completed soon, and they will be handed over to the International Cricket Council by the 15th of this month.
The President advised the officials to have a systematic plan to properly maintain the new grounds.
Sri Lanka is to co-host the World Cup tornament with India and Bangladesh. Sri Lanka will host 12 matches including one semi-final at three venues in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 which opens in Dhaka on February 19, 2011 and climaxes in the final in Mumbai on April 2.
Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage, Secretary to the Ministry of Sports Udaya Ranjith Senavirathna, Chairman of Sri Lanka Cricket D. S. De Silva, National Curator Anuruddha Polonnovita and other officials of the Sri Lanka Cricket also participated.
