Media activists protest the disappearance of Sri Lankan journalist

Sri Lanka media activists and opposition party supporters staged a peaceful protest in front of the Fort Railway Station today to mark one year since the disappearance of cartoonist and columnist Prageeth Eknaligoda.

Protesters shouted slogans and held placards that read "One year since Prageeth's disappearance " at the protest organized by the Alliance of Media Organizations.

Another placard read on top "Two years since Lasantha assassinated" and 'Do we allow the injustice' on bottom with a portrait of slain Sunday Leader Editor Lasantha Wickramathunga who was killed in broad daylight on January 08, 2009.

A large crowd of media personnel, human rights activists, and politicians demanded the government to disclose information on the disappearance of Eknaligoda, a freelance reporter for Lanka-e-News, a news site that was critical of the government.

Parliamentarians of Sri Lanka's opposition party Democratic National Alliance (DNA) Vijitha Herath and Tiran Alles accompanied by DNA leader former Army Chief Sarath Fonseka's wife Anoma Fonseka participated in the protest.
