The High Commission of India has assured the Sri Lankan government that necessary action will be taken to ensure the safety and security of the Sri Lankan institutions in the Tamil Nadu State of India.
The assurances come following a request made by the Sri Lankan government to provide security for all the Sri Lankan pilgrims visiting Chennai in the wake of an attack on the Mahabodhi Society Temple in Chennai Monday (24) night.
An unidentified gang of 10-15 persons armed with clubs carried out an attack on the Sri Lanka Maha Bodhi Centre in Egmore, Chennai around 9.00 p.m. on Monday (24).
The attackers injured three Buddhist monks, namely, Ven. Kumburugamuwe Vajira Nayaka Thero, the Chancellor of Sabaragamuwa University, Ven. Samitha Thero of the Maha Bodhi Centre in Chennai and Ven. Nepalaye Maithree Thero, a Nepal national residing at the Maha Bodhi Centre at the time, and damaged the property at the center.
The Indian High Commission has assured Sri Lanka's Ministry of External Affairs that a full investigation would be carried out into the attack on the Temple and informed that two suspects have already been taken into custody in this regard, the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement today (25).
The High Commission has also assured the Ministry that necessary action would be taken to ensure the safety and welfare of the Maha Bodhi Centre and other Sri Lankan institutions and establishments in the State of Tamil Nadu.
