Improvement work on Sri Lanka's main potable water reservoir to commence today

Inauguration of a project to improve Sri Lanka's main reservoir supplying potable water to the capital Colombo and suburban areas is to commence today with the participation of a Hungarian delegation.


Improvement work on the 125-year-old Labugama water reservoir and treatment plant will be financed with Hungarian aid.
The Hungarian delegation led by Hungary's Secretary of State Dr. Barlos Butos met Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa Tuesday (18) at the Temple Trees during a ceremony to mark the 125th anniversary of the Labugama reservoir.


Minister of Postal Services Jeewan Kumaratunga presented a commemorative stamp issued to mark the occasion to President Rajapaksa.
Addressing the group President Rajapaksa said the government spends a large amount of money to supply clean water to the people because provision of pure and safe drinking water is a prime duty and a responsibility of the government.
The President appraised the Hungarian delegation of the development activities launched by the government and new investment opportunities available in the North.
He also discussed the measures taken by the government to promote tourism and cultural relations between Sri Lanka and Hungary and pointed out many opportunities available in a number of sectors to improve the bilateral cooperation between the two countries
Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, deputy ministers Geethanjana Gunawardena and Nirupama Rajapaksa, Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga, and Special Commissioner of Colombo Municipal Council Omar Kamil were also present.
